about

Music created for the exhibition “Meeting Mars” by the STARS Design group (a collaboration project between University of Lund and NASA concerning “housing” on the planet Mars).

Concept: What if there were sound in space? What would it sound like?

“Sound consists of pressure variations in matter and therefore it needs a pre-existing medium, such as air, in order to be transmitted. Any sound originating from space is created by vibrating molecules in the air caused by electromagnetic waves. These vibrations are then interpreted by radio sets and translated into sound. Electromagnetic waves, unlike sound waves, do not need a tangible medium to pass through and can thereby travel through the vacuum of space. Since any oscillating particle motion can be considered as sound, electromagnetic waves are a source of sound in the exploration of space audio.”
